One of the most common questions about the Witr prayer is simply: when is its time? Can you pray it early, before sleeping — or is it better to hold it until close to Fajr? The Prophet ﷺ answered this quite clearly in the hadith.
The time of Witr: from after Isha until dawn
Scholars agree that the time for Witr runs from after the Isha prayer until the arrival of Fajr (dawn). In other words, the whole night is its window. As long as dawn has not broken, you are still within its time.
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged making Witr the last of the night prayer:
"Make Witr the last of your prayer at night." (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Early, or close to Fajr? Both are from the Sunnah
The good news is that you are given room. The Prophet ﷺ gave guidance that fits each person's situation:
- If you fear you will not wake in the later part of the night, pray Witr before you sleep. Abu Hurairah mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ advised him to pray Witr before sleeping (reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim).
- If you expect to wake in the last part of the night, delaying it is better. A narration in Muslim mentions that the prayer of the later night is witnessed (by the angels), and that is more virtuous.
So neither choice is "wrong" — one favours certainty, the other favours the more virtuous time. Choose whatever keeps your Witr from being missed.
What if Fajr arrives before you have prayed it?
Here some care is needed. According to the majority (jumhur) of scholars, once the time of Fajr enters, the time for Witr has ended. Some scholars discuss the possibility of making up (qada) a missed Witr during the day — and for a detailed matter like this, the best course is to return to a teacher or scholar you trust, because there are differing views that need to be explained properly.
What is clear and agreed upon: as long as dawn has not broken, the door of Witr is still open. So praying "Witr before Fajr" is not merely allowed — that is precisely where its entire time lies.
In short
- The time of Witr: from after Isha until dawn (Fajr).
- It may be prayed early (before sleeping) or delayed to the last part of the night.
- Making it the seal of your night prayer is encouraged.
- If you are unsure you will wake, pray it early — a Witr that is kept is better than one that is missed.
