After becoming pure (from menstruation), we would not consider brownish and yellowish discharges to be of any significance

Narrated by Abu Dāwūd with this wording and by Al-Bukhāri without the additional (after purification) · Authentic

عن أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ رَضي الله عنها، وكَانَتْ بايَعَت النبيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، قالت: كُنَّا لا نَعُدّ الكُدرَةَ والصُّفْرَةَ بعدَ الطُّهرِ شيئًا.

“’Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), the one who pledged allegiance to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), reported: After becoming pure (from menstruation), we would not consider brownish and yellowish discharges to be of any significance.”

Explanation

The female Companion ’Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that after attaining purity from menstruation, women, during the lifetime of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), would not consider the fluid discharged from the vagina - which tends to be blackish or yellowish - to be menses. Hence, such a discharge did not stop them from praying or fasting.

Benefits

• The fluid discharged from a woman's vagina - after attaining purity from menses - is of no significance even if it looks brownish or yellowish out of the traces derived from the blood.
• The brownish and yellowish discharge during the usual menstruation period is considered menses because it is blood during the normal bleeding period but it is mixed with fluid.
• A woman must not refrain from praying or fasting because of the brownish and yellowish discharge after attaining purity from menses; rather, she should make ablution and offer prayer.
