ONE HADITH A DAY

forbade (eating the flesh of) all carnivorous animals that have fangs and all birds that have talons

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضيَ اللهُ عنهُما أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: نَهَى عَنْ كُلِّ ذِي نَابٍ مِنَ السِّبَاعِ، وَعَنْ كُلِّ ذِي مِخْلَبٍ مِنَ الطَّيْرِ.

“Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade (eating the flesh of) all carnivorous animals that have fangs and all birds that have talons.”

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) forbade eating any predatory animal that hunts with its fangs and any bird that cuts and holds with its claws.

• The basic principle regarding foods is that they are permissible, except for what is proven to be forbidden.
