مقطوع
maqṭūʿ
A saying or action of a Successor — the generation after the Companions.
Like mawquf, this is a label about ATTRIBUTION, not about authenticity. It is the Successor-level equivalent of mawquf.
Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ defines it as "what comes from the Successors, stopping at them, of their sayings or actions".
A live trap: maqṭūʿ (مقطوع) is NOT munqaṭiʿ (منقطع). Maqṭūʿ means attributed to a Successor; munqaṭiʿ means the chain is broken. Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ states the distinction explicitly — but he also records that earlier scholars used the words the other way round: he found "maqṭūʿ" used for "munqaṭiʿ" in the words of Imām al-Shāfiʿī and Abū al-Qāsim al-Ṭabarānī. So when reading those two, the word means "disconnected".
