ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi
A hadith that was hasan on its own, but which also came through further chains — the extra support raises it to the top grade.
This is the parallel construction to hasan li-ghayrihi, one rung up. The base report already meets the hasan standard (an honest narrator, slightly lighter precision); corroboration compensates for exactly the deficiency that kept it out of sahih.
Al-Nawawī states it: if the narrator of a hadith falls below the rank of the precise memoriser but is well known for truthfulness and propriety, and his hadith is narrated by more than one route, it is strengthened and rises from hasan to sahih.
These two "li-ghayrihi" terms are the least classical items on this list. The concept is genuinely in Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ and al-Nawawī, but the paired naming li-dhātihi / li-ghayrihi is a later systematisation — Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ presents these as sub-cases within his discussion of hasan, not as four named grades. Who first coined the fourfold naming, we could not establish.
